Been too lazy to update my blog. Everything's on facebook nowadays.

Just a quick update. Recently acquired a new addition to my family of tigers. Gotta thank my pal Josh for helping me out with that. It's the special MINI edition. Yeah the MINI from Mini cooper.

Am hooked since I got to know about them. Love their simple sleek design. Plus it's way less common than ur usual Nike or Adidas. Was especially happy when I managed to get the Rakugaki. Yeah it's a darn old design but it's freaking awesome!.

My hands are itching to get new photography gear again. Although I probably won't be getting anything anytime soon since I have a Japan trip coming up, here's what I have my eyes on. Yum~!

Top of the list is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 ATX.

This is a UWA (ultra-wide angle) lens with a fixed aperture. In this case, the aperture advantage is used more to get faster shutter speed in low light instead of getting shallow depth. Haven't used this before but on paper I really do prefer this over Canon's UWA lens. Since my kit lens starts with 15mm I won't have any need for a focal length more than that. Good thing with 3rd party lens, it's cheaper!

It would be sweet if by some miracle I somehow could afford this before my Japan trip. This would make an awesome lens to bring for holidays!

Next on the list is the Sigma 50mm EX DG f/1.4 HSM.

I love my 50mm prime. But I wish it could do more. So I'm looking for an upgrade. This is an odd one. This time, this 3rd party lens cost MORE than Canon's equivalent. I have to test it for myself, but if the HSM is quicker, that on it's own would be worth the extra cost. The only thing I would like for my portrait lens is the USM system. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 only has a micro USM. So this seem like a logical alternative. Really hate how my prime hunts and takes so long to focus.

Review of this lens seems good. Better build and optic quality that's on par if not better than Canon's. Looks good indeed!

I guess the next thing to get is a new camera body then. My 400d is serving me very well but it feels awfully dated especially when I use the newer cameras like the 60d. I reckon when Canon comes out with their new DIGIC system, it'll be pretty epic. Hopefully they'll be able to boost the ISO to atmospheric levels but still keep the noise low. Wootz!

Some things happen for a reason...

Some things that seem bad might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. =)

Couple weeks ago the few of us went to help Ms Renee (our music teacher during high school) in her charity event for a bunch of refugee kids. Gonna backtrack a lil. A couple of months ago, we found Ms Renee facebook (actually I'm not sure who found who) but we all started msging and arranged to meet. The bunch of us met and had a wonderful dinner at Ms Renee's place. Nostalgic stuff.

Her kids are pretty grown up now. Heck, the few of us were the first few to see her daughter. We were there a couple hours after she was born. There are plenty of stories to tell relating to the music club back in high school, but to cut the long story short, she asked whoever's free to help her out at this annual thing she's been doing.

As the year ends...

Yet again, another year has past. Time really flies when you're taking time to think back upon the things that happened in the past year. At around this time last year, I was at Melbourne thinking about the fun things I've done, people I met and the stuff I experienced. Fuck, those were good times.

This year has been interesting in a different way as it's the time where I started my first serious permanent job. To be honest, I kind of took a risk taking on this job. Upon graduating, I actually got quite a number of job offers from agencies & design studios, but instead I snubbed them and went with what really is the wildcard.

I guess I saw potential & something different in this company. Hopefully it ain't bad investment. Only time will tell. So far, things are looking good. But as always and with every other thing, it's a race against time. There's always a dateline for everything, no?

Bah, work aside. There were pretty interesting turn of events that happened throughout the year as well. Saying that they were complicated situations would be an understatement. There are stuff which I definitely regret. Not so much about stuff that I did, but rather what I didn't do. To be honest, I've been having a rather bad run in the relationship side of things. Sometimes I would ask myself if that could be the reason. Guess it's possible that certain things can change a person.

Anyways, if it ain't a bad year I guess it must be a good year. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. I would say it's an entire year of beginnings. Should definitely celebrate how far we've come, what we've achieved. Good or bad. Here's to a more awesome year ahead!

Unfortunately this post ain't an official year wrap up like I did last year. I might do one when I have the time. But for now I'll leave you with this shot I took at Broga Hill catching the sunrise. The start of a new day!

Rainforest Festival 2010

Mentioned about this awhile back, couple months ago I was flown over to East Malaysia for this event. I heard about this event few years back. Seemed like an interesting music event. Although I was over there for literally less than 1 full day but it was an interesting event nonetheless.

My colleague that I went with was from Kuching so we somehow managed to have some local food. (although it was at the break of dawn) O.O

Too bad ASEANA didn't perform this year. Would be cool to see my sifu's up there doing their thing.

Since I was there for work, didn't have that much time to go around much. But here are some random shots anyways.

This was the only main gig I attended. Couldn't stand the mud so in the end I decided to kick it back at Heinekabana (see below) with a cold beer and watch from the screen.

There were a lot of foreigners present at the festival. To be honest I wasn't expecting that. There are ppl from all over the world and many are regulars to the festival.

I listen to hitz.fm every morning when I'm driving to work. These few days, they will play this raya song. It sounds really good and very untypical Malay. I thought it was Zee Avi or something. That's until the dj announced the name of the song and singer. It was Yuna.

"Huh? Yuna?, who's that?" I thought to myself. I googled her and saw a tudung clad Malay girl. Ahh, I remembered seeing her picture in the newpapers or magazines before. All I thought was she's just another Malay singer. That's until I searched her on youtube and listened to her songs.

She sounds NOTHING like how you'd imagine her songs to be by just looking at her. She sounds like she's from overseas. Well all I know I'm digging her songs. She sings mostly in English and sometimes in BM. I think I like her songs enough to want to go out to get her album.

There was this sustainability subject I took during my time of study at Uni. It was kind of foreign as sustainability and going green over here in M'sia is nowhere close to Australia. It's a world of a difference.

This subject was hard work and although I learned alot from it, it was the biggest pain in the ass. However I found out our work got featured at VEIL(Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab) a group established by the Victorian government in Australia. It's a program partnered with all the other big uni's in Vic, like RMIT, Monash & Melb Uni.

New "Eye"

This bad ass you're looking at now is the new lens I just bought. My kit lens has kind of reached it's end after the Redang trip. It has served me well. With it gone, it gives me more reasons to replace it with a better walkabout lens.

To be honest I've been searching for the right one since quite awhile. Doing research and reading online. The number 1 criteria for my new lens to be was it has to be hella sharp. I'm going for quality. Almost any lens would be a step up from the kit lens.

So I looked into the popular constant aperture lenses next. It seemed to be the obvious choice for me until Canon launched this lens, the 15-85 IS USM. The range was mad appealing. It's both wider and longer than my kit lens and it has IS & USM. Sweet. Read some reviews and found out it's also hella sharp and gives beautiful bokeh.

That's when I figured I might not need a constant aperture lens. I could just use a prime if I wanted speed or depth. Of cuz it would be darn sweet if it is a constant f/2.8 but it isn't a necessity. That's when I didn't look back.

Did some test shots in my room, so the ISO is mad high and shutter speed is really slow. Wanted to push it to see how sharp and good the new 4 stop IS is. Pretty satisfied with the results.

Here's my very dusty Saviour Gundam.

Had an outing today to Klang. It was more of a glutton outing lol, but I brought along my camera to test the lens. Really tossed it into the deep end. During the day it was mad bright and hot, and we went to I-City at night. So that's more shooting at max ISO. Pretty satisfied with the results. I'll post the pix another time but here are some shots I took to test the bokeh.

Again these are totally unedited. Pretty impressed with it. Even though it's not an L lens and not a constant aperture lens it's really pretty good.

Lets not forget this is mounted on my dated entry level 400D body! I would seriously put this lens up there with the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 as the EFS lens to beat. Best thing is I got this lens at a fraction of what the 17-55 costs. =)

Got to know from speedhunter.com that he mostly uses the Canon 85mm f/1.2. Epic la. IMO one the best Canon lens.

Been awhile since I did a movie review. So you must be able to guess this movie was good.

I've always been a fan of these mind themed movies. The Matrix, Shutter Island, and now Inception. Brilliant stuff!.

I was able to follow the story pretty well although it might seem like it's confusing. I don't really find myself going Huh?

Love the signature sound effect. That strong loud mysterious sound. Hans Zimmer does what he does best.

Must watch. I rate it a 8.5/10.

Sry for the lack of updates. Been terribly busy lately. Some stuff got stolen in my office and this resulted in me having to reconstruct alot of my projects. Super shit timing. Just when most of the projects are about to be wrapped up and right before I backed them up.

Anyways, I just returned from The Rainforest Festival. Awesome stuff. We were lucky enough to stay at the venue itself. It's a really nice hotel facing an awesome beach on one side and the rainforest on the other. When I looked at the price it's no wonder it's so nice. The cheapest rooms are going for at least RM600 plus.

Too bad I was at Kuching for less than 24 hours. Super rush, didn't get to go around. Managed to try the kolo mee right before I flew back tho.

Anyways, went on a shoot last week. Very bad weather as it was raining most of the time. Still don't have the time to go through the pix. But here are some anyways.

Continuing the awesome trip post, everyone's missing the awesome time we had.

Enjoyed the VIP treatment, as we had a big group. We had a specially prepared area for us to eat and the guides were really nice, they accompanied us for walks, drinks and even brought us out to hunt crabs at night. Which is probably not in their job requirement. But I guess they're happy to do it as it's their "love job" something they enjoy doing.

Lots of insides jokes were born during the trip as usual. Kept us laughing till our tummy hurts. Although I didn't get to take as much pix as I would like, but guess I'm lucky to have any at all. Almost all the pix have a story behind that would make us smile.

We went on a thurs, a day before the public holiday. We practically have the whole beach to ourselves on this day. Can't say the same for the rest of the days as the crowd starts to pour in.

Playing Frisbee requires some skills. Gotta know how to throw it and to compensate for the wind.

Catching isn't straight forward as well as the Frisbee's flight path curves as the wind blows.

Was freaking dark. Had to go full manual.

Should save up for a new camera body as well. The new bodies could go up to really high ISO with no noise. Awesome stuff.

She was so cute when I showed her picture on my camera. She was pointing and looked down to her own shirt probably wondering why they're the same.

If you're into photography and you haven't heard of him you really gotta visit his site. I would say he's on a godlike level. I don't even know which picture of his to put up because he has literally thousands of awesome shots.

The super thing about him is he shoots just about anything, sports, landscape, portrait, street, whatever, and they're ALL AWESOME! Even though they're different kind of photography he still manages to keep his style in his pictures. Something that's not commonly seen to me as most great photographers usually keeps to a certain genre they're good at.

To the beach we went 1

14 of us went on a trip to Pulau Perhentian, Redang & Lang Tengah. Originally it was scheduled on Feb when I just got back from Melbourne. But then the date shifted a couple of times till the end of May. In fact, I only confirmed I was going 2 weeks before the trip as I just started work. But lucky for me I got confirmed in a RECORD period of 2 months. Wootz!

Anyways, it was an awesome trip. It was a second time there for me although I stayed in Pulau Redang instead. The places we snorkeled were different as well. Saw alot this time. Sting ray, giant turtle, sharks, Moray eel & etc.

When we weren't snorkeling, we were playing on the beach. Since we had a big group we had no problem in numbers. We played dodgeball, captain ball & Frisbee. Awesomeee stuff! At night our guide took us out to hunt for crabs in the low tide. Interesting experience as we ate the crabs live just like that. Tasted pretty alright actually.

Since my pix are already on facebook I'll post some of the pix taken from Mel's waterproof cam first.

About 20 of us were chasing this turtle. This thing is FAST! But I was pretty surprised when I first saw it. DAMN it's HUGE!

Sharks next. I was lucky to follow a diver who strayed away from the pack. He had a reel like bait thingy and most of the sharks were there. Got to see it attacking some fish or whatever it eats. Pretty scary.

Pulau Redang changed alot since I was there. I was still a kid when I was there. Alot more resorts now. But the water is still very clear and the sand is still literally like powder. Better than Pulau Perhentian. Difference is when you go out to snorkel. The water gets a lil murky and it's hard to find the baby sharks now.

Too bad the camera got spoiled not long after this.

Just got back from Pulau Perhentian. Awesome trip. Lots of laughs and interesting moments. Chasing giant turtle, sharks and playing on the beach. That's what I call life!

Publication Design is one of my favorite area of design. However in the working world, we designers will be introduced to plenty of constrictions and this serve as a challenge to us.

The company I'm working for is very content driven. Realizing that content can't work on its own, there has to be a certain standard in visuals to help push the content. That's where I come in. I have to revamp the look of our projects and I can't just drop something that looks totally different on the table. I've got to do things gradually so that the client will be more acceptable to it.

Sv loaned his camera and stuff for the shoot, too bad he couldn't make it. With the extra camera, I asked Kevin to shoot some behind the scenes shots. Tiring but interesting day out. Should do more of these outings.

Laptop is definitely a massively extra baggage, but it's good to be able to see the pictures on the spot to evaluate.

Working from home on a Sunday

Yeah, that's what I was supposed to do. But it's 9pm and I'm still waiting for the copy. No fun. Been pretty free at work this month, now the dateline's here it's rush hour again. All this last minute work is not good.

Yes, I don't like to wait. I could be out having fun by now.

On a side note, I got myself a battery grip for my camera. Wanted to get a third party one since Canon is as always twice the price (if not more). However I was lucky to find someone who could give a good deal. Adding the grip significantly adds the weight & size of the camera which is good. My camera has always been too small for my hands, and the added weight makes it feel more solid. It'll help to get more steady shots.

My favourite part of the grip are the vertical buttons. Now I don't have to awkwardly reach for the buttons when I take portrait shots.

Now next is to save up for a new lens. Which is not going to be cheap. I could buy a new camera with the money. But no point getting a new body if I'm still using a kit lens. The kit lens just won't cut it for me anymore. Sure I've taken good shots with it, but the amount of blur shots & crap quality is just frustrating. Time to take it to the next level.

Was browsing through Dawn Yang's blog and found an interesting post. It's about a blogger's posts on symbolism in various music acts. Primarily Lady Gaga. Apparently there are lots of symbolism related to the occults like the Illuminati & subjects like mind control in her songs & videos.

It's up to you whether to believe it's true or not, but you'll definitely raise your eyebrow the next time you watch her videos. Interesting read nonetheless. Check it out:

Headed up to Genting for the rave party last weekend. Was superb. The weather was cold, fog so thick you can only see a few meters ahead. DJs was awesome.

Local chick Dj Droolotte Tasha started out to warm the crowd. Dj Kyau & Albert came out later that night, they rocked it. The most anticipated DJ for me was Paul Oakenfold. Unfortunately he didn't do it for me. Only his last half an hour was interesting. Wrapping up the night was Ronski Speed and he nailed it from the start. Superb stuff!

Eventful night, brought a bottle up. Drank up and camwhored. Loads of EPIC pictures that I can't post up. Most of these pix are already up on FB but these pictures here are color treated differently (like this version much more) and I throwed in some "bonus" pictures just for you guys. ; )

CNY 2010

Happy Chinese New Year to ya'all! Yeah I know it's kinda late for that but you know. Busy times. Visiting people, meeting up with old friends and all.

Organized another pool party. Was pretty good, nothing really dramatic happened this year. Just people having fun. Unfortunately didn't take any pictures at all since there's only one of me. I single handedly had to go get people drinking and playing so had no time to take any pictures. Too bad theres no other photog in this bunch.

Gotta apologize to some of those who got left out since I couldn't entertain everyone at once. Was pretty damned tired since I hardly slept the night before and I went hiking early in the morning. So gotta think twice before I organize another thing like this. So need a committee lol.

Thoughts on Photography

Photography is the new in thing since the introduction of digital slrs. It made the world of photography a lot more simpler and convenient. That's probably why almost everyone have a dslr now. But does it really make it that much easier in getting a good shot? I really don't think so.

As much as I like photography and as much as I want to get the best shot possible, I really wouldn't think it's a simple subject to be good at. I guess many people think that with the affordable price of dslrs, people can buy one and start taking nice pictures.

The thing with digital is it won't cost a thing to press the shutter button. Just snap away, when the picture sucks? Just delete it. Unlike film where one would probably put more thought before shooting. My theory is that if you shoot enough pictures, you're bound to get a couple of good shots. There's always luck involved in photography. However someone good would probably get a lot more good shots out of the few he/she took.

Like many things, there are a lot that goes into a good picture. There's the basic technical knowledge, experience, art sense, patience, luck & etc. It's really beyond getting a lens with big aperture and getting pictures with shallow DOF. Not to say pictures with shallow DOF aren't friggin awesome. =p

A funny thing I've encountered are the haters. You see, with photography becoming digital, retouching and editing becomes an ease and can sometimes be a lifesaver. Yet there are some out there that actually hates the usage of photoshop or editing software. Seriously, what gives? I'd say that a majority of epic shots out there are retouched one way or another.

Editing isn't a simple task on it's own, a picture can easily be edited and ending up looking worse than it started off. I say those haters are simply people who don't know how to edit photos and are just jealous lol. I can't see why wouldn't they take their pictures further to the next level if they could. If a picture is awesome, it's awesome. I don't really care if it's taken with a $30k camera or just a phone.

The reason I like photography is I kinda treat it like art. It's like making something that looks beautiful. Just capturing that certain moment isn't enough, I want that moment to look beautiful at the same time. It makes me happy when someone likes my picture or uses it as their profile picture in facebook.

What's important is that I simply enjoy it. It's really all for the fun of it, from the process to the end product.

Last outing in Melb

Went for a last photo crawl with Josh. Was a pretty interesting day, we pass by a park filled with people and loud music so we thought it must be some festival. Upon getting closer I saw a Greek flag, so I thought it must be some Greek festival. Josh was saying "Wow, looks very happening there. Lets check it out, and maybe we can join in"

THAT was before we saw the rainbow flags. GG.com. That explains why we saw so many gay people around. It was pretty damn huge, thousands of gay people were there. Scary experience..

Anyways we walked around till we reached some memorial shrine which was really damn shit cool. Over here all we have is just some big ass statue as tribute. But this is one huge nice place at a very prime location. Awesome stuff.
